Who We Are
About Us
Edmonton grandmothers and grand-others standing in solidarity with African grandmothers since 2006.
The Grandmothers of Alberta for a New Generation — affectionately known as The GANG — began in 2006. We are one of more than 200 groups of grandmothers and grand-others Canada-wide supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.
Our Goals
- Raise awareness about African grandmothers, their strengths and their needs
- Stand in solidarity with African grandmothers
- Mobilize support and advocate on their behalf
- Respect the culture, values and life experiences of African people
- Promote social justice through solidarity and consultation
- Protect human dignity for those we work with
- Honour the wisdom and experience of the grandmothers of Africa and Canada
The Stephen Lewis Foundation
The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in March 2006. What began with a few committed groups has evolved into a dynamic movement spanning Canada, Australia, the UK, and the US. More than $33 million has been raised in support of African grandmothers.

The Grandmothers of Alberta for a New Generation (GANG) is an Edmonton-based nonprofit founded in 2006. We stand in solidarity with African grandmothers through the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. Our board of directors leads fundraising, awareness, and advocacy efforts across Edmonton. Contact us to get involved.
GANG was incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act as a non-profit society. We hold monthly board and general meetings and run signature fundraising events including the Fabric Frenzy and Shakers and Makers Market. In our first 15 years, the GANG raised over $1.1 million for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
